ELVIS BACK AT PRESTWICK FIFTY YEARS ON!

airport celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of "The King’s" only UK visit

PRESTWICK Airport is the only place in Britain where Elvis Presley ever set foot.

On March 3, 1960, at about 7.30pm, twenty-five year old Elvis flew into what was then a US Air Force base at Prestwick on a brief re-fuelling stop. En route from Germany to the USA, Sergeant Presley was on his way home after two years’ military service.

It only lasted an hour but on Wednesday, March 3, Prestwick is celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the most famous stopover in Scottish history.

Sponsored by Prestwick Airport, South Ayrshire Council, West FM, Spirit AeroSystems, Zisys Events and Diva Music, the unique charity show in the terminal building – lasting sixteen hours - will have everyone all shook up.

All proceeds raised are going to Ayrshire children’s charity Clic Sergeant.

The mammoth show features top singers and bands performing Elvis songs from his iconic twenty-one year career plus videos and interviews.

At 9.40am, "Elvis" - in Sergeant's uniform - will land at Prestwick on Ryanair flight FR407 from London Stansted. - to be met by paparazzi!

And at 3.10pm, the "Best Dressed Elvis" Prize Draw will take place along with a special Plaque Unveiling to commemorate his visit.

Enjoy a Starbuck's coffee or two zingy Elvis burgers for £9.99 in Yates whilst soaking up the music and atmosphere, and parking during the event is only £1.

And Prestwick Airport is inviting people to come along dressed as Elvis...and the best-dressed lookalike will win a pair of tickets to one of its destinations.

Prestwick Airport Managing Director Iain Cochrane said: “It’s now or never! You'd have to have a wooden heart not to be hugely proud that Prestwick Airport is the only place in Britain where he ever set foot.

“Fifty years ago he flew in for an hour and this Wednesday we’re delighted to revive our links with the rock and roll legend.

“This is an excellent opportunity to mark a unique milestone as well as helping to promote Ayrshire and bring together the travelling public, local people and fan clubs worldwide.

"We certainly are all shook up!"
