WHICH? REPORT CONFIRMS OUTSTANDING VALUE OF GLASGOW PRESTWICK’S RAIL LINK

A NEW Which? report shows that the rail service between Glasgow Central and Glasgow Prestwick Airport is almost eight times cheaper than the comparable service between Paddington and Heathrow.

Which? was reporting on how expensive it can be for British passengers reaching airports by train, particularly those using London airports.

It noted: “The cost of a single ticket from Glasgow to Prestwick airport cost just 17p a mile whereas it costs £1.22 a mile on the Heathrow Express between Paddington and Heathrow.”

The survey was welcomed by the airport. Chief Commercial Officer Graeme Sweenie said: “The Which? report is further evidence of the tremendous value of our rail link to Glasgow city centre and beyond.

“We are the only Scottish airport that has its own railway station. Some 600,000 of our two million passengers annually arrive by train. Rail is a key growth driver for Glasgow Prestwick but rail capacity and frequency to Glasgow need expanding.

“I believe it’s time for the Scottish Government to get behind this unique asset. Having scrapped the £400m Glasgow Airport Rail Link, they should now look at developing Glasgow Prestwick’s rail link to the city and beyond - a best-value service that has now been endorsed by Which?.”
